Hard Water in Missouri: Test the Supply Before You Treat the Symptoms

Start with the clues, then test

If possible, also test a softened tap to see whether the unit is doing its job. Hardness is commonly reported as grains per gallon, or gpg, and milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate. A practical interpretation is 0 to 3.5 gpg as soft, 3.5 to 7 as moderately hard, 7 to 10.5 as hard and anything above 10.5 as very hard. Treatment is a household choice, not a pass-fail drinking-water verdict. The more useful question is whether scale, cleaning effort and appliance exposure justify the equipment and upkeep.

Temporary fixes have limits

Remove an aerator or showerhead and soak the scaled parts in plain white vinegar, then brush and rinse them. Follow appliance instructions when descaling a coffee maker or dishwasher. Clean the water-heater drain valve area only after shutting off its energy source and following the manufacturer’s procedure.

Size the softener from actual load

A softener needs enough usable grain capacity to handle hardness multiplied by daily water consumption, with extra allowance if measurable iron is present. Do not select a unit from the number of bedrooms alone.

Ask these questions before approving equipment: What is the tested hardness at the untreated tap? Is iron present? How many people use the house? What is the estimated daily water use? How many days should the unit run between regenerations? What salt dose produces the quoted capacity? What service flow rate can the valve and resin bed deliver? Will exterior hose bibs remain untreated? Where will regeneration discharge go?

An oversized unit can sit too long between regenerations. An undersized unit may regenerate constantly or let hard water through during heavy use. Published maximum grain capacity can also depend on an inefficient salt dose, so compare usable capacity at the proposed setting.

Track salt instead of guessing

Keep the brine tank roughly one-third to one-half full unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise. Break up a salt bridge only with the unit isolated and a blunt tool, never by striking the tank. If salt use suddenly rises, check for a running toilet, dripping fixture, incorrect hardness setting or repeated manual regenerations. If the salt level never drops, inspect for bridging, a blocked injector or a failed regeneration cycle.

Once a month, note the salt level and meter reading. Periodically clean the brine tank, inspect the drain hose for kinks and test both untreated and treated water. A working ion-exchange softener should produce a clear difference between those readings.

Call when the evidence stops lining up

Bring in a water-treatment professional when hardness remains after regeneration, the control head leaks, the drain runs continuously, water pressure drops across the unit or the water contains iron, sulfur odor, sediment or an unknown well-water contaminant.
